Modern Healthcare: What it will take to stop insurers from fleeing after the ACA’s repeal

Health insurers and regulators are extremely nervous about congressional Republican leaders’ announced plans to repeal most of the Affordable Care Act soon after Donald Trump takes over the presidency next month and wait several years to establish a new system.

“If they wiped out the mandate quickly, that’s a dealbreaker for insurers,” said Rosemarie Day, a Massachusetts health policy consultant who helped lead the rollout of her state’s Obamacare-like healthcare reform law in 2006. “They’d have little hope of keeping healthy people in, rates would skyrocket, and insurers wouldn’t sell in 2018.”
